General Chiropractic Questions
What is chiropractic care and how does it work?
Chiropractic care is a non-invasive, drug-free healthcare discipline focused on diagnosing, treating, and preventing conditions related to the spine, musculoskeletal system, and nervous system. The cornerstone of chiropractic treatment is the spinal adjustment — a precise, controlled force applied to joints that have become restricted or misaligned. By restoring proper joint motion, chiropractic adjustments reduce nerve irritation, relieve pain, improve mobility, and support the body’s natural ability to heal. At Avalon Chiropractic Healing Center, chiropractic care is integrated with holistic and functional medicine for a truly comprehensive approach to health.
Is chiropractic care safe?
Yes. Chiropractic care has an excellent safety record and is widely recognized as one of the safest non-invasive approaches to musculoskeletal pain management. Our doctors at Avalon Chiropractic Healing Center perform thorough evaluations before beginning any treatment and always adapt their techniques to each patient’s specific health status, age, and comfort level. Serious adverse events from chiropractic care are extremely rare. If you have specific health concerns or pre-existing conditions, we encourage you to discuss them with our doctors during your initial consultation.
What conditions can chiropractic care treat?
Chiropractic care at Avalon Chiropractic Healing Center is effective for a wide range of conditions including back pain, neck pain, disc herniation, sciatica, headaches and migraines, whiplash, sports injuries, scoliosis, carpal tunnel syndrome, frozen shoulder, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, joint pain, and posture-related dysfunction. We also offer integrative care for chronic systemic conditions through our holistic medicine and functional medicine programs.
How many chiropractic visits will I need?
The number of visits depends entirely on your condition, its severity, how long it has been present, and your personal health and recovery goals. Acute conditions may resolve in just a few visits, while chronic or complex conditions typically require a longer course of care. After your initial evaluation, your doctor at Avalon Chiropractic Healing Center will provide a clear, realistic treatment plan with an estimated timeline. Many patients also choose to continue with periodic maintenance care to preserve their results and prevent recurrence.
Does chiropractic treatment hurt?
Most patients find chiropractic adjustments comfortable and even relieving. Some may experience mild soreness for a day or two after their first few sessions — similar to the feeling after starting a new exercise program — as the body adjusts to restored joint motion. Our doctors at Avalon Chiropractic Healing Center always communicate with patients throughout their treatment and adjust their technique based on your comfort and feedback. If you are concerned about discomfort, we can discuss gentler options such as our Low Force Impulse IQ5 instrument-assisted adjustment.
What is the “popping” sound during a chiropractic adjustment?
The audible pop or crack that sometimes accompanies a chiropractic adjustment is called a cavitation. It occurs when gas bubbles dissolved in the synovial fluid surrounding a joint are rapidly released as the joint surfaces separate during the adjustment. The sound itself is harmless and does not indicate anything being “cracked” or damaged. Not all adjustments produce an audible sound, and the therapeutic benefit of an adjustment is not dependent on whether or not a pop occurs.
Can I receive chiropractic care if I’ve had back surgery?
In most cases, yes — though technique modifications are necessary. Our doctors at Avalon Chiropractic Healing Center are experienced in working with post-surgical patients and will review your surgical history, imaging, and current presentation before recommending any treatment. Gentle, low-force techniques such as the Low Force Impulse IQ5 adjustment are often particularly well-suited for patients with prior surgery. For disc-related post-surgical pain, our DRX 9000 spinal decompression may also be appropriate in select cases.
What makes Avalon Chiropractic Healing Center different from other chiropractic practices?
Avalon Chiropractic Healing Center is the only Excite Medical DRX9000-certified practice in the desert community, offering the most advanced non-surgical spinal decompression technology available. What should I wear to my chiropractic appointment?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy movement. Avoid restrictive jeans, belts, or formal attire. During your examination, your doctor may ask you to perform specific movements, stretches, or positional tests, and comfortable clothing makes this process more effective and comfortable. If you’re unsure what to wear, casual athletic or activewear is always a good choice for your visits to Avalon Chiropractic Healing Center.
Spinal Decompression & Specialized Services
What is the DRX 9000 and who is it for?
The DRX 9000 is the most advanced non-surgical spinal decompression system available and Avalon Chiropractic Healing Center is the only Excite Medical DRX9000-certified practice in the desert community. It uses computerized traction technology to gently decompress the spinal discs, creating negative intradiscal pressure that encourages herniated or bulging disc material to retract and promotes the influx of healing nutrients into the disc. It is most appropriate for patients with herniated or bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, sciatica, spinal stenosis, and posterior facet syndrome. Learn more on our DRX 9000 spinal decompression page.
What is functional medicine and how does it complement chiropractic care?
Functional medicine is a root-cause, patient-centered approach to healthcare that identifies and addresses the underlying biological, nutritional, hormonal, and lifestyle factors driving chronic disease — rather than simply managing symptoms. At Avalon Chiropractic Healing Center, functional medicine complements chiropractic care by addressing the internal biochemical environment — reducing inflammation, correcting nutritional deficiencies, balancing hormones, and supporting gut health — while chiropractic care optimizes the structural and neurological environment for healing. Together, they produce outcomes that neither approach can achieve alone. Explore our functional medicine program.
What physiotherapy services do you offer alongside chiropractic care?
